As a newly established institution, KIPP East End High School faced the challenge of creating operational systems from scratch. They faced challenges in the following areas:
Physical Hall Passes Weren’t Effective
Outdated physical hall passes caused disruptions, as they were often discarded, misplaced, or left in the wrong classrooms. Without a pass, students couldn’t leave, further interrupting class time and making consistent enforcement difficult.
Manual Behavior Tracking Wasted Time
Manually tracking behavior through spreadsheets was time-consuming and inefficient, making it nearly impossible to automate consequences. This led to inconsistent monitoring and missed opportunities for timely interventions.
Flex Periods Lacked Structure
The school’s ‘Eagle Hour’ advisory period was difficult to manage with their existing systems, as frequent roster changes and attendance tracking created extra administrative work. This lack of adaptability led to inconsistent supervision and student engagement during flex time.
